When Athena’s captain discovers Kat snooping below deck, she soon realizes, like the antiquities hidden onboard, that she’s been kidnapped and that her job and her life are in danger.
My Thoughts
Murder on the Med is a light but complex mystery with an unusual setting and charming cast of characters. I’d not read other Kat Lawson books but didn’t have any problem reading this one as a standalone mystery. The character is smart, sassy, and demonstrates some pretty inventive thinking as she unravels the mystery here. And what a mystery! We begin with a possible missing woman and end up in the middle of an audacious trafficking scheme in stolen antiquities.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will be recommending the series in my library.

My Thoughts
Reminiscent of the old gothic romances of the 70’s, The Hudson Collection features a plucky heroine who teams up with a damaged but noble man to aid a young girl and her family in danger of losing their home. Elsa is one of the most appealing heroines I’ve come across recently – smart, vulnerable, and very brave. The story is very well-developed with action starting almost immediately and not stopping until the very end.
The historical elements here are fascinating, with dives into New York’s elite society scene post World War I, the polio epidemic and the far-reaching effects of medical research, and post-war mental health challenges for returning soldiers. If you’re tired of blood-and-gore mystery & suspense novels that focus on the most horrifying aspects of the human psyche, this book is for you. It is a captivating, gentle mystery that keeps your attention page after page.

Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear – Follow the adventures of Maisie who grows from a teenage maid to an adult detective through this fabulous historical series set in the first half of the 20th century. Winspear has just published the final entry in the series, which you can read about here. Start with the very first book, Maisie Dobbs, and progress through the rest. Just as good in audio form as print.
James Rollins is the complete opposite of the previous author! He specializes in pulse-pounding adventure featuring the Sigma Force, a super-secret and multi-talented government agency whose job is to keep the world from imploding. Rollins has written multiple books in the series that all revolve around an intricate, well-researched piece of history. My favorite in the series is The Last Odyssey which features plenty of the monsters from the Greek myths I love. Start with the first in the series, Sandstorm, and go from there, although I started with #2 in the series, Map of Bones and was totally hooked. If you’re already a Rollins fan, there’s a new Sigma Force novel out this summer – Arkangel. You’re welcome!
Kate Mosse is the author of some very chunky books! However, those books will keep you up late turning page after page. My favorite is Sepulchre but her other work is just as fascinating. Meticulous historical fiction, mostly set in France. Reading her work is a commitment well worth your time.
Erin Hart is the author of what I call the “bog mysteries.” I found Hart’s work as I was randomly researching the topic after seeing a news story about an ancient body discovered in an Irish peat bog. Hart’s bog series features two recurring characters – pathologist Nora Gavin and Irish archaeologist Cormac McGuire. Start with the first in the series, Haunted Ground.
Katherine Arden is the author of one of my all-time favorite high fantasy trilogies – The Winternight Trilogy. Start with the first, The Bear and the Nightingale and immerse yourself in Slavic folklore and magic. This is an absolute stunner of a series!

My Thoughts
The Pyramid Murders is a delightful cozy mystery that will appeal to readers who enjoy smart and sassy protagonists, interesting and not too complicated plots, and a whole lot of FUN! This is the second I’ve read in the Clara Vale series and I am coming to really like the elegant and determined heiress-chemist-turned-private-investigator.
Here, there is the added element of Egyptology – mummies, sarcophagi, digs in the desert, and maps to secret chambers housing untold treasures. Pair that with some sneaky antagonists and lots of madcap adventures and you have one of the most entertaining cozies coming out this summer.

This second entry in the Pet Momma cozy mystery series is a fun, quick read. The author has made an excellent start on developing characters that readers will want to follow as more books are written in the series.
The writing here is well-done, with a nicely paced plot, witty dialog, appealing characters, and a cracking good mystery. Fans of cozy mysteries, especially ones with a paranormal overlay, will thoroughly enjoy this one.

My Thoughts
If the madcap detective films of the 1930s had a bookish sister, it would be this book. Crowens dives deeply into the Hollywood that produced those iconic films starring William Powell, Myrna Loy, Nigel Bruce, and Basil Rathbone and overlays them with a clever, sassy mystery featuring as snarky a detective as I’ve ever encountered.
Crowens writes with abandon, deliciously describing the naughty and often hilarious goings-on behind the scenes in Tinseltown. I was reminded of one of my all-time favorite series of books by George Baxt which feature mysteries surrounding Hollywood royalty. Those are mostly out of print and hard to come by, so I am happy to see a 21st century author plumbing the depths of Old Hollywood for some fun mysteries.
This is a quick read that will appeal to fans of cozy and historical mystery stories.

My Thoughts
When I was a reference librarian, I adored Miller’s Guide to Antiques, so when I learned the author of this delightful mystery is part of the Miller family, it was a bonus reading experience!
Miller has delivered a clever mystery featuring two endearing and super-smart characters in Carole and Freya. The author does an excellent job with dialog, description, plotting and pacing although I admit I got a little irritated with the numerous references in the early chapters to the dirty deed done to Freya in Cairo. Just tell us what it was, for goodness sake! (I am an impatient reader sometimes!)
The deeper I got into the book, the more engrossed I became because the mysterious elements abounded! Observant readers will figure out at least two of the villains early on, but that won’t detract from the sheer pleasure of this delightful book. I hope this becomes a series with Carole and Freya going on all sorts of adventures.

My Thoughts
This series is like taking as vacation with old friends. I’ve been reading the Bibliophile mysteries from the start and still eagerly await each new entry. I can’t say that for many cozy series, and this one made me stop and think a bit about why this series is different.
Partly (and maybe above all) Carlisle is a top-notch writer. She has a mastery of words and description, is excellent at character development and planning (HOW does she keep Brooklyn’s family straight?!?), and plots a clever, clever mystery every time. I also don’t see her re-using bits of dialog and narrative description the way some other authors do. As a reader, I feel like she, as the author, has really spent time and attention on every detail, and I truly appreciate that.
Readers new to the series might want to go back and read them in order, but it’s not entirely necessary. You can read this one and still have a solid grasp of what’s going on.
As usual, I’m recommending this.

As Claire desperately tries to keep a lid on the shameful secret that would definitely alienate her new friends, the gang must race against their own incompetence to find the murderer before the murderer finds them.
My Thoughts
This was an absolute delight to read!
A protagonist and her “familiar” ghost and who will appeal to young readers as well as seasoned mystery fans like me, plus lightly disguised caricatures of the typical upper class English family (including a daughter named Figgy, a brother named Basher, and a mother named Clemmy) blend together to create a sassy and clever mystery.
Fans of cozy British mysteries that include a bit of the supernatural will gravitate to this one. I’ll be recommending this as part of my “31 Days of Halloween” reading list.

My Thoughts
Carol Perry’s “Witch City” series is one of my favorites and she doesn’t disappoint in this new entry. The book opens with newlyweds Lee and Pete getting used to married life, and Lee experiencing some changes in her professional life. She’s tapped to make a documentary about a new international seafaring museum opening up in Salem, and immediately is dropped into a mystery surrounding the activity.
Of course, there’s a murder involved, paired with some high-stakes theft and intrigue which Lee handles with her usual sass and wit. Old favorites are back – the news station crew, Aunt Ibby and her investigator friends, and, of course, O’Ryan. Fans of the series will blow through this in a couple hours.
