Cayman Conundrum by Stacy Wilder

June 9-20 Virtual Book Tour
Liz Adams Mystery Series

Description

A honeymoon in paradise turns perilous in this riveting seaside mystery.

A tropical vacation transforms into a web of danger and deception when an author and his manuscript vanish. Is his thriller about money laundering in the Caribbean too close to the truth?

With the stakes high and time ticking, Private Investigator Liz Adams and her new husband, Brad, along with their truth-sniffing Labrador, Duke, partner with the local authorities to unravel a multitude of crimes. As they search for clues, the newlyweds explore the delights of the island, including a hunt for buried treasure.

Will they uncover the truth in time, or will the honeymoon end in heartbreak? Set against the backdrop of the stunning island of Grand Cayman, this cozy mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

My Thoughts

This is a new series for me, and I was pleased to find that I could jump in and enjoy this without having read the earlier books. What I found was a delightfully fun mystery with a bit of an edge – a cozy blended with a hard-edged crime and ruthless criminal.

Liz and Brad (and, of course, Duke!) are as engaging a pair of detectives as I’ve found recently. I was reminded a bit of Carolyn Hart’s “Death on Demand” married duo, but Liz and Brad are definitely a 21st century couple!

The murder mystery here is handled with sensitivity, given that the victim is a friend of the couple. The plot is well-developed and sneaky enough that I was still guessing past the half-way point. The guilty party is totally repulsive and unexpected.

This will be a great summer read, especially if you’re on a beach!

After Pearl by Stephen G. Eoannou

April 14 – May 9 Virtual Book Tour
A Nicholas Bishop Mystery

Description

1942. War rages in Europe. Pearl Harbor still smolders. And alcoholic private eye Nicholas Bishop wakes up on a hotel room floor with two slugs missing from his .38 revolver. The cops think he’s murdered lounge singer Pearl DuGaye, mobsters think he saw something he shouldn’t have, and Bishop remembers nothing…

Together with his indomitable assistant Gia Alessi, who he may or may not have fired, a WWI vet who often flashes back to 1918, and a one-eyed female dog named Jake, Bishop tries to piece together the events that took place during his disastrous five-day bender. Along the way, he stumbles across a dirty politician, a socialite and her unfaithful husband, and a cabal of American Nazis who are undoubtedly up to no good.

Written in the spirit of classic noir, Eoannou adds his own unique voice and flair to the genre in this, the first action-packed outing of the Nicholas Bishop Mysteries.

My Thoughts

Fans of traditional noir crime fiction will thoroughly enjoy this first in a series featuring PI Nick Bishop. Eoannou delivers a clever mystery filled with witty and gritty dialog, colorful characters, and an on-the-money plot that will have you guessing right up to the end.

I especially enjoyed the Buffalo setting, although I am not a Buffalo native. I live about 60 miles to the east of B’lo but spend enough time there to recognize many of the descriptive details Eoannou includes in the narrative.

There seems to be a resurgence of crime fiction set in between the wars or just after WWII. Much of what I’ve read has had a bit of a madcap theme with very quirky characters, both human and animal. Eoannou, however, fully embraces the Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross McDonald school of detective fiction and I LIKE IT!

Grab this one from your library or buy a copy and settle in for some entertaining reading.

The Bone Pendant Girls by Terry S. Friedman

February 10 – March 7, 2025 Virtual Book Tour
The Andi Wyndham Series

Description

Beware the Fisherman

Andi Wyndham has communicated with spirits since she was a kid. When a bone pendant carved into the likeness of a girl’s face calls to her at a gem show in Pennsylvania, she can’t resist buying it and a sister piece. When she discovers the girls are missing runaways and the pendants are made of human bone, Andi is drawn into a mystery that will force her to confront her gifts, her guilt, and the ghosts haunting her.

Pendant Girls Mariah and Bennie urge Andi to find a man they call “Fisherman,” a master of disguise. Teaming up with a handsome private eye and a South Carolina sheriff, Andi must find the girls’ bodies and put their souls to rest, before the Fisherman casts his deadly net to trap Andi.

My Thoughts

Bone Pendant Girls is a non-stop, nail-biting ride of story. While there are plenty of books out there about people who can talk to the dead, this one comes alive in the hands of this author. Spare prose focuses on the important elements of the story – Andi, the girls, and the Fisherman – and builds tension that ultimately snaps and builds again until you get to the stunning conclusion.

The story is well-paced and full of action. The author skillfully blends a murder mystery with the supernatural elements, which results in one of the most chilling climaxes I’ve read in awhile. The characters, especially Andi, are nicely developed and their relationships add to the success of the story.

As a jewelry artist and a frequent visitor to gem shows, I am always looking at carved stones. This story gives me a new perspective with which to handle and care for these kinds of objects. I will think long and hard about handling or buying any stones that are carved faces!

Recommended for fans of paranormal mysteries.

The Tell-Tale Homicide by Daphne Silver

THE RARE BOOKS COZY MYSTERIES
by Daphne Silver
November 25, 2024 – January 3, 2025 Virtual Book Tour

Rare books librarian Juniper Blume lands her dream job: creating a new museum in her Chesapeake Bay town of Rose Mallow, Maryland. But on her very first day, she makes a shocking discovery – a dead man clutching a book by Edgar Allan Poe, stolen from the collections!

As Juniper gets closer to cracking the coded message hidden inside the book, she realizes someone is desperate to keep its literary secrets buried… even if that means burying her too.

Dressed in her signature vintage style with rescue pup Clover by her side, the fearless bookworm must hunt down the culprit before becoming the next victim. But can she solve the case without jeopardizing a budding romance with her boss, the dashing Leo Calverton? And can she help her sister Azalea perfect their grandmother’s legendary blintz recipe before the Rose Mallow Festival?

A delightfully deadly page-turner, The Tell-Tale Homicide continues the charming Rare Books Cozy Mystery series by Agatha award-winning author Daphne Silver. Fans of Kate Carlisle and Jenn McKinlay will love tagging along with the whip-smart, book-loving Juniper on her adventures.

My Thoughts

The second entry in this series is just as charming as the first. Juniper Blume is back along with her sister Azalea, the hunky Leo Calverton (who is NOT her boyfriend!) and a few other colorful characters populating the quaint town of Rose Mallow.

The murder mystery involves priceless books by Edgar Allan Poe but also plenty of red herrings driven by the chaotic nature of past loves & betrayals and new relationships. Juniper is positioned here to be the bridge between the wealthy Calvertons and the business owners and residents of Rose Mallow, which I think will make for some entertaining future books. The resolution of this mystery was a surprise and went in a completely unexpected direction. I enjoy the author’s style and storytelling quite a bit and will be recommending this series.

THE RARE BOOKS COZY MYSTERIES
by Daphne Silver
November 25, 2024 – January 3, 2025 Virtual Book Tour

Description

Rare books librarian Juniper Blume knows this much… an ancient Celtic manuscript shouldn’t be in a Maryland cemetery. But that’s exactly what her brother-in-law claims.

Last year, Juniper saw the 1,200-year-old Book of Kells in Ireland. She learned how their bejeweled covers were stolen centuries ago, never to be seen again. So how could they have ended up in Rose Mallow, a small Chesapeake Bay town? Being Jewish, the Book of Kells might not be her sacred text, but as a rare books librarian, the ancient book is still sacred to her, making it important to Juniper to find out the truth.

Rose Mallow is the same place where Juniper used to summer with her sister Azalea and their grandmother Zinnia, known as Nana Z. Ever since Nana Z passed away, Juniper’s avoided returning, but her curiosity is greater than her grief, so she heads down in her vintage convertible with her rescue dog Clover.

Juniper discovers that her sister Azalea has transformed their grandmother’s Queen Anne style mansion into the Wildflower Inn, backing up to the Chesapeake Bay. Although Juniper isn’t much of a cook, Azalea has kept their grandmother’s legacy alive, filling the house with the smells of East European Jewish treats, like sweet kugels and tzimmes cake. Will coming back here feel like returning home or fill Juniper with a deeper sorrow? Can she apologize to her sister for not being there when she was needed most?

My Thoughts

The first in what appears to be series featuring Juniper Blume, Crime & Parchment is a well-written, clever mystery that will appeal to fans of cozies as well librarians (and there’s a big overlap there!).

Silver does a good job of fleshing out the characters which will certainly have a place in future books. Juniper is portrayed as both self-assured and full of doubt, never quite certain of her place in Rose Mallow. Her sister Azalea rounds out the family connection and the relationship between the sisters is one of the tension points in the story. Then there’s the potential love interest for Juniper, Leo Calverton, and the complicated relationship between Azalea and her ex-husband Rory.

Beyond the relationships is the crux of the mystery – could the long-lost, priceless covers of the the Book of Kells really be in Rose Mallow, Maryland? Sounds preposterous, right? The author makes an interesting case and seamlessly incorporates lots of Maryland history into the story.

This is a series to watch and will be one I recommend. Watch for Silver’s next entry in the series, The Tell-Tale Homicide, coming this fall and reviewed here on November 30.

Death in the Ozarks by Erik S. Meyers

November 11 – December 20, 2024
Virtual Book Tour

Description

A cross between Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple and a Cheers bartender, Sally Witherspoon, a 50-something accountant turned biker-bar owner, loves solving puzzles. Up to now, she has focused on helping neighbors and friends find lost jewelry, lost pets, and lost loves.

But when she finds her best friend and business partner, Bill Arnold, dead in a dumpster behind her bar on a Saturday night, she needs all her wits and grit to find out who did it.

And she won’t stop until she does.

My Thoughts

Sally Witherspoon is very different from the typical amateur detective you find in most cozy mysteries. She’s older, a bit rough around the edges, worldly, and living life on her own terms. This is a welcome change from the spunky, quirky young women found in many modern mysteries – in one of those, Sally would be the odd auntie driving around town in a vintage car getting into mischief.

Here, Sally shines. She’s gruff and no-nonsense, but loves her people and her place in the world. The mystery is more “Law & Order” style than “Hallmark Channel” and the murder is a bit gritty. The relationships that are key to Sally’s life shine here, and there is plenty of emotion and humor as well as mystery.

I was reminded more than once of Joan Hess’ Maggody mystery series, and in a good way. I’ll be recommending this series for sure.

A Hush at Midnight by Marlene M. Bell

October 7 – November 1, 2024
Virtual Book Tour

From the award-winning author of the ANNALISSE MYSTERY SERIES.

THE VISIT THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Celebrity chef Laura Harris dwells on the horror of finding her mentor’s body in the groundskeeper’s disheveled bed—pillow and bedding half covering her open eyes—purple bruising around her mouth. A grisly snapshot in time revealing the Texas woman’s last moments during her attack. The elderly matriarch from the small town of Stenburg has left the physical world, and Laura is shattered.

She is catapulted headlong into the pursuit of a casual executioner, one bold enough to come and go from the crime scene with ease, dropping bizarre crumb trails designed to mock the deceased. But Laura herself doesn’t go unnoticed. As she digs deeper, she is followed and bombarded by warnings to leave the state.

When the victim’s attorney informs Laura that she’s to inherit the entire Stenburg fortune, the last act of kindness has made Laura the main person of interest in the investigation.

Message by message, Laura is methodically taunted by someone so deranged and driven they’ll do whatever it takes to dislodge Laura from Texas – permanently.

My Thoughts

Bell has delivered a taut, suspense-filled tale full of intrigue, betrayal, and surprises. The characters are both engaging and despicable, the plot well-constructed, and the descriptive narrative of the Texas landscape beautifully done.

Complicated relationships abound, as do strong women characters who drive the action of the story forward to its exciting conclusion. The relationship between Laura and Hattie and the suspicion that falls on Laura after Hattie’s death is the stuff that makes a gripping story and Bell deftly leads the reader through some twists and turns. Fans of harder-edged domestic suspense will thoroughly enjoy this one.

Color Me Dead by Teresa Trent

October 14 – November 8
Virtual Book Tour

Description

Artist Gabby Wolfe has the ability to see not only the beauty of the living but the despair of the dead. When she returns to her childhood home in Henry Park Colorado, she is forced to bring along her younger brother Mitch. He is on a “break” from college where he was majoring in wine, women, and song. If that isn’t enough they also have Mitch’s rambunctious beagle Luigi along who prefers to spend his days wallowing in junk food. When Gabby draws the death of a young woman before it happens, she knows she must tell someone and risk a new job and her professional credibility. Will she reveal her secret in time to save the woman in the water or will it be too late?

My Thoughts

Fans of lighthearted but inventive mysteries with a touch of the supernatural will enjoy this offering from Teresa Trent. Gabby, Mitch, and (of course!) Luigi make a memorable trio as they move back to a childhood home but find themselves right in the middle of an emotional mess.

Trent builds some nice relationships throughout the story which help settle Gabby’s place in Henry Park and suggest the possibility of future entries in a series. Gabby’s paranormal ability is interesting – I’ve only seen the concept of drawing the future done in one other book that I recall, so this was an entertaining element added to the mix of mystery and a little romance.

Clocking in at just under 250 pages, this one makes a very pleasant afternoon reading experience. Recommended

A Batavia-on-Hudson Mystery

Bianca St. Denis travels to Kyoto to return a priceless artifact recovered in Batavia-on-Hudson during last summer’s flood. It’s late October and the city of 2,000 shrines is in full autumn splendor. While she’s in Japan’s ancient capital, Bianca visits with her son, a student at Kyoto University. Ian shows her the sights and introduces her to his circle of friends—his chosen family.

On the night of her welcome party, Bianca thinks she witnesses a struggle in the garden, perhaps even a murder. When the police investigate and find no body, she is stumped yet alarm bells won’t stop ringing. She knows she’s witnessed something.

When a dead body surfaces and suspicion falls on her son, Bianca’s maternal instincts spring to action to protect Ian and clear his name. Meanwhile, things in Batavia-on-Hudson are tense. Sheriff Mike Riley is losing his re-election bid while tackling devastating news about his dead partner, and wavering about his troubled marriage.

Autumn Embers explores the malleable nature of our identities and reminds us that chosen families can be stronger than we think, and that true friendship can bridge any distance.

My Thoughts

As an Upstate New Yorker and loyal mystery reader, I have gravitated to deBellegarde’s Batavia-on-Hudson series and thoroughly enjoyed each one. She has built an engaging series featuring characters who become more complex with each book, especially Bianca who is navigating an entirely new world following the death of her beloved husband.

Autumn Embers is a bit harder-edged than previous entries in the series, bringing in more unsavory elements of the mystery/suspense genre like police corruption and organized crime. This seems to be a natural evolution for Bianca and Mike as they both grapple with major changes and challenges to their lives.

The plot here is intriguing, with deBellegarde delivering two stories of challenges – one with Bianca in Japan and one with Mike in Batavia-on-Hudson. The stories are very different but extremely unsettling for both characters and are delivered with wit and cleverness. The insights into Bianca’s relationship with her son and Mike’s past are woven into the larger story seamlessly.

The author secures her place among the best of New York State mystery authors with this one. Recommended.

Death in St. Georges by M.A. Monnin

Virtual Book Tour – July 29 – August 23, 2024

The Intrepid Traveler Series

Description

When Stefanie and Thomas meet in Bermuda for time alone away from the demands of the Artifact Retrieval Team that Thomas heads, their romantic rendezvous is waylaid after an archaeologist requests their help to recover an emerald bracelet that’s been stolen from his site.

Thomas is reluctant, but Stefanie can’t resist the lure of buried Spanish treasure. Then one of the archaeologists is murdered, and they find themselves on the suspect list. Spanish gold isn’t the only thing uncovered. Secrets can be deadly, and Stefanie and Thomas must find the killer before it’s too late.

My Thoughts

The third entry in Monnin’s Intrepid Traveler Mystery series, Death in St. Georges, is an appealing story featuring a pair of characters who have it all together. Stefanie and Thomas are a charming pair of amateur detectives who magnanimously step into a mystery on the tropical island they’ve retreated to for a much needed vacation. It’s clear the pull of the mystery is part of what keeps them together.

The plot is an enticing mix of the thrill of archaeological discovery, local lore, and plain old human greed. Stefanie and Thomas are a great team, playing off each others’ strengths and always there for each other. The end is especially fraught with danger as the pair battle a hurricane as they place the final pieces of the puzzle on the table.

Monnin is an imaginative and skilled writer, and this story has made me a fan. Recommended!
