Christmas Presents by Lisa Unger

Description

Instead of presents this Christmas, a true crime podcaster is opening up a cold case…

Madeline Martin has built a life for herself as the young owner of a thriving business, The Next Chapter Bookshop, despite her tragic childhood and now needing to care for her infirm father. When Harley Granger, a failed novelist turned true crime podcaster, drifts into her shop in the days before Christmas, he seems intent on digging up events that Madeline would much rather forget. She’s the only surviving victim of Evan Handy, the man who was convicted of murdering her best friend Steph, and is suspected in the disappearance of two sisters, also good friends of Madeline’s, who have been missing for nearly a decade. It’s an investigation that has obsessed her father Sheriff James Martin right up until his stroke took his faculties.

Harley Granger has a gift for seeing things that others miss. He wasn’t much of a novelist, but his work as a true crime author and podcaster has earned him fame and wealth—and some serious criticism for his various unethical practices. Still, visiting Little Valley to be closer to his dying father has caused him to look into a case that many people think is closed—and some want reopened. And he has a lot of questions about the night Stephanie Cramer was killed, Ainsley and Sam Wallace disappeared, and Madeline Martin was left for dead, bleeding out on a riverbank.

Since Evan Handy went to jail, three other young women have gone missing, most recently a young college dropout named Lolly. Five young women missing in the same area in a decade. Are they connected? Was Evan Handy innocent after all? Or was there some else there that night? Someone who is still satisfying his dark appetites?

As Christmas approaches and a blizzard bears down, Madeline and her childhood friend Badger return to a past they both hoped was dead—to find the missing Lolly and to answer questions that have haunted them both, discovering that the truth is more terrible and much closer to home than they think.

Coupling a picturesque, cozy setting with a deeply unsettling suspenseful plot, Christmas Presents is a chilling seasonal novella that can be enjoyed all year long.

My Thoughts

I picked up this nail-biter of a novel and set it down 2 hours later, absolutely drained. This is a whopper of a story that grabs ahold from the first chapter and doesn’t let you go until the final sentence.

While the story is shorter than others, I found myself feeling a sense of urgency while reading, adding to the tension. Everything works here from the characters to the dialog to the narrative structure and description – it all comes together in this incendiary story that will have you gripping the book, white-knuckled, as you gnaw on your fingernails.

So well done.

Now You See It by Carol Perry

Description

Bestselling author Carol J. Perry returns with the latest installment of her Witch City Mysteries!

Marriage isn’t the only thing new in Lee Barrett’s life when she’s tasked with a hauntingly dangerous assignment in her job as program director for Salem, Massachusetts’s local station, WICH-TV . . .

Just married, Lee and her husband, Detective Sergeant Pete Mondello, are settling into their new home when Lee is dubbed WICH-TV’s new “Historical Documentary Chief Executive.” Her first subject is the brand-new Salem International Museum, slated to be a location for traveling blockbuster exhibits, starting with “Seafaring New England.”  From research to collecting artifacts of Salem’s long-ago days as a shipping capital, the project is a challenge—but when the driver of a truckload of antiquities turns up dead under a pile of fall leaves, it’s not quite the kind of challenge Lee expected . . .

Soon, Lee and Pete are dredging up clues along with a hardy crew of helpers, including Lee’s librarian aunt, Ibby, Lee’s best friend and practicing witch, River North—and of course the clairvoyant cat, O’Ryan. But when a ship model in the exhibit’s collection appears to be haunted, Lee will have to dive into her own treasure trove of psychic gifts before a killer comes to the surface to strike again . . .

My Thoughts

Carol Perry’s “Witch City” series is one of my favorites and she doesn’t disappoint in this new entry. The book opens with newlyweds Lee and Pete getting used to married life, and Lee experiencing some changes in her professional life. She’s tapped to make a documentary about a new international seafaring museum opening up in Salem, and immediately is dropped into a mystery surrounding the activity.

Of course, there’s a murder involved, paired with some high-stakes theft and intrigue which Lee handles with her usual sass and wit. Old favorites are back – the news station crew, Aunt Ibby and her investigator friends, and, of course, O’Ryan. Fans of the series will blow through this in a couple hours.

Ghost Ship by Kate Mosse

Description

Next in the #1 Sunday Times bestselling series, New York Times bestselling author Kate Mosse returns with The Ghost Ship, a sweeping historical epic of adventure on the high seas.

The Barbary Coast, 1621. A mysterious vessel floats silently on the water. It is known only as the Ghost Ship. For months it has hunted pirates to liberate those enslaved by corsairs, manned by a courageous crew of mariners from Italy and France, Holland and the Canary Islands.

But the bravest men on board are not who they seem. And the stakes could not be higher. If arrested, they will be hanged for their crimes. Can they survive the journey and escape their fate?

A sweeping and epic love story, ranging from France in 1610 to Amsterdam and the Canary Islands in the 1620s, The Ghost Ship is a thrilling novel of adventure and buccaneering, love and revenge, stolen fortunes and hidden secrets on the high seas.

My Thoughts

Kate Mosse is one of those authors who could write the alphabet and I’d gladly read it. She is one of the best builders-of-worlds writing today, and her historical research is impeccable. She tends to focus on women’s roles in various historical periods, throwing bright light on the horrible conditions and restrictions women endured. However, Mosse’s female protagonists are always those who rise above or go right through the patriarchy and she has outdone her previous characters with Louise.

There’s action, there’s adventure, there’s love all wrapped up in Mosse’s gorgeous prose. This one is a winner for sure and is one I’ll be adding to my print collection.

A Scrap of Silk is Book 1 in the addictive new Tiggy Jones Mystery Series.

Cancel a couple of night’s sleep and get it now.

My Thoughts

I always enjoy a new mystery series, and Virginia King has made me a fan with this mysterious, semi-creepy, and generally fun book. She has given readers a very appealing protagonist in Tiggy Jones, and dropped her into Topsham, a veritable bed of intrigue. The component of the mysterious locked cellar is handled nicely, even though it turns into a gruesome and sad story.

There are a lot of characters introduced throughout the story, which I did find a bit of a challenge to keep straight, but it all worked out in the end with a deliciously witty and ingenious narrative. I initially labeled this a “cozy” mystery, but there were definitely some dark traces included in the story, especially the diabolical antagonist. I can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed a commupance quite so much! Well done.

Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian

Description

From bestselling author Alex Grecian comes a folk horror epic about a ragtag posse that must track down a witch through a wild west beset by demons and ghosts—and where death is always just around the bend.

Sadie Grace is wanted for witchcraft, dead (or alive). And every hired gun in Kansas is out to collect the bounty on her head, including bona fide witch hunter Old Tom and his mysterious, mute ward, Rabbit.

On the road to Burden County, they’re joined by two vagabond cowboys with a strong sense of adventure – but no sense of purpose – and a recently widowed schoolteacher with nothing left to lose. As their posse grows, so too does the danger.

Racing along the drought-stricken plains in a stolen red stagecoach, they encounter monsters more wicked than witches lurking along the dusty trail. But the crew is determined to get that bounty, or die trying.

Written with the devilish cadence of Stephen Graham Jones and the pulse-pounding brutality of Nick Cutter, Red Rabbit is a supernatural adventure of luck and misfortune.

“Impossible to put down.” —Kelly Link, author of Pulitzer Prize finalist Get In Trouble

My Thoughts

Imagine if Stephen King wrote The Sisters Brothers; you would have this unexpectedly bewitching yet unceasingly horrifying story. Truly unlike anything I’ve read recently, author Alex Grecian blends an American Old West posse story with witch-hunters, demons, ghouls, ghosts, shapeshifters, and witches to create one of the best horror stories I’ve read in years.

The premise is basic to the genre – suspicious and frightened townspeople put out a bounty on the local witch with disastrous consequences. Everything else is completely off the rails, making this oddly refreshing.

The success here lies in the excellent character development that Grecian weaves throughout. From the mail-order-bride Rose who is made of sterner stuff than anyone imagines, to the apparently mute girl-child who is so much more than she seems, to the variety of cowboy caricatures who appear throughout – all elicit some level of pity or admiration from the reader. I was especially drawn to The Huntsman and would love a follow up book about him!

The narrative moves quickly and is filled with remarkably visceral description and dialog, and more than a few surprises, all leading up to a spectacular ending. Fans of horror and history will enjoy the ride.

This one will make my “Best Of” list for 2023.

Fairytales, Fantasy, Horror, Magical, Mystery, Teens

Starlings by Amanda Linsmeier

Description

A dark YA fantasy debut perfect for fans of House of Hollow and Small Favors. In the wake of her father’s death, a teen girl discovers a side of her family she didn’t know existed, and is pulled into a dark—and ancient—bargain she is next in line to fulfill.

Kit’s father always told her he had no family, but his sudden death revealed the truth. Now Kit has a grandmother she never knew she had—Agatha Starling—and an invitation to visit her father’s hometown, Rosemont.

And Rosemont is picture perfect: the famed eternal roses bloom all year, downtown is straight out of the 1950s . . . there’s even a cute guy to show Kit around.

The longer Kit’s there, though, the stranger it all feels. The Starling family is revered, but there’s something off about how the Starling women seem to be at the center of the all the town’s important history. And as welcoming as the locals are, Kit can’t shake the feeling that they’re hiding something from her.

Agatha is so happy to finally meet her only granddaughter, and the town is truly charming, but Kit can’t help wondering, if everything is so great in Rosemont, why did her father leave? And why does it seem like he never wanted her to find it?

My Thoughts

This dark but uber-compelling blend of fantasy and horror with a touch of fairy tale will keep readers glued to their seats, devouring this in one sitting.

The base story is somewhat familiar – parent keeps their family secret from child, child is key to some age-old ceremonial activity, child kicks butt and breaks curse. In the hands of a less skilled writer, this could be second-rate drivel, but Linsmeier is no second-rate hack. Her plot is well-constructed and very clever, and her narrative prose is lovely and horrifying at the same time. I look forward to more from this debut author.

Fans of fantasy-horror will adore this.

In the Shadow of the Bull by Eleanor Kuhns

In the Shadow of the Bull
by Eleanor Kuhns
July 17 – August 11, 2023 Virtual Book Tour

Ancient Crete, 1450 BC. In a world of Goddess worship, sacred snakes and sacrifice, human jealousy, resentment, and betrayal still run wild . . .

When her sister Arge drops to the floor in convulsions and dies at her wedding, fifteen-year-old Martis, a young poet and bull leaper in training, is certain she was murdered. The prime suspect is the groom, Saurus, from the Greek mainland, but when Arge’s shade visits Martis, swearing Saurus is not the murderer, Martis vows to uncover the truth.

As Martis begins asking questions, she discovers that while Arge may have had no secrets, many of the people around her certainly do.

My Thoughts

Years of reading mystery novels have taught me one thing – people are the same, no matter the time period. Strong emotions such as love, hatred, and jealousy have caused humans to behave in terrible ways for centuries, and Eleanor Kuhns skillfully demonstrates her understanding of the human psyche in this well-constructed novel.

The characters here are especially well drawn. Martis is a headstrong young woman who chafes at the restrictions preventing her from following her dream of bull leaping, even though she is good at it. She doesn’t understand her sister’s eagerness to marry, and also does not appreciate her other sister’s rough treatment.

Imagine Martis’ heartbreak when Arge dies on her wedding day, then imagine her confusion as it becomes clear the death was not a natural one. The route to a solution is not an easy one for Martis or for the former bridegroom, Saurus, who is the prime suspect. Martis perseveres, leading up to an even greater emotional reveal of the murderer.

Kuhns delivers a readable, engrossing mystery full of vivid narrative depicting Ancient Crete, along with a set of memorable characters who will stay with you even after you turn the final page. I’ve not read Kuhns’ work before, but will be looking for it now.

Historical, Mystery, Suspense, Women

Woman in the Castello by Kelsie James

Description

Set in 1960s Italy, this stylish, atmospheric debut spins a bewitching web of ruthless ambition, family secrets, and the consequences of forbidden love, as an ambitious American actress snags the starring role in a mysterious horror movie shooting on location in a crumbling medieval castle outside Rome…

Rome, 1965: Aspiring actress Silvia Whitford arrives at Rome’s famed Cinecittà Studios from Los Angeles, ready for her big break and a taste of la dolce vita. Instead, she learns that the movie in which she was cast has been canceled. Desperate for money, Silvia has only one choice: seek out the Italian aunt she has never met.

Gabriella Conti lives in a crumbling castello on the edge of a volcanic lake. Silvia’s mother refuses to explain the rift that drove the sisters apart, but Silvia is fascinated by Gabriella, a once-famous actress who still radiates charisma. And the eerie castle inspires Silvia’s second chance when it becomes the location for a new horror movie, aptly named The Revenge of the Lake Witch—and she lands a starring role.

Silvia immerses herself in the part of an ingenue tormented by the ghost of her beautiful, seductive ancestor. But when Gabriella abruptly vanishes, the movie’s make-believe terrors seep into reality. No one else on set seems to share Silvia’s suspicions. Yet as she delves into Gabriella’s disappearance, she triggers a chain of events that illuminate dark secrets in the past—and a growing menace in the present . . .

My Thoughts

2023 is shaping up to be an awesome year for books and this one is no exception. A riveting and rambunctious historical mystery set in a dilapidated castle in 1960s Italy, it has everything – a resourceful but flawed heroine, a sick mother, a feisty and mysterious aunt, a handsome leading man, and a boatload of family secrets.

The writing is neat and engrossing, with plenty of attention to descriptive narrative that beautifully evokes the eeriness and creepiness of the castello, and the character development is spot on. Silvia is a strong, resourceful, realistic protagonist and immensely likable. Her tenaciousness is admirable! The relationship between Silvia’s mother and aunt is also fraught with tension and emotion. Such a good story! Add this one to your summer reading pile.

Advance Praise

“The 1960s in Rome, a crumbling Italian castle on the edge of a volcanic lake, a glamorous aunt she’s never met, and a starring role in a horror movie that begins to feel a bit too real…Kelsey James’s debut novel is a delicious Gothic filled with atmosphere, twists, romance, and dark secrets. Readers will devour it.” – Megan Chance, bestselling author of A Splendid Ruin

“Cinematic and spooky…Readers will be swept up in the glamorous—and sometimes grungy—1960s movie scene” – Nicole Baart, bestselling author of Everything We Didn’t Say

“Like Jess Walters’s Beautiful Ruins, the glamour and heady indulgence of the era take center stage in this captivating, multilayered story.” – Susan Wiggs, # 1 New York Times bestselling author

No Time To Breathe by Lori Duffy Foster

Description

Journalist Lisa Jamison wants to blow off some steam after an argument with her boyfriend, so she heads to her friend Ricky’s kickboxing studio for an early morning workout. She expects to find Ricky alone, setting up for his first class of the day, but someone was there before Lisa, uninvited. Ricky is dead, shot only moments before she arrived, and now Lisa is a suspect in his murder. Lisa wants two things: to clear her name and seek justice for Ricky. But the deeper she digs, the more the danger mounts. Can she find Ricky’s killer before the killer eliminates the last obstacle, silencing Lisa for good?

My Thoughts

This another solid entry in Duffy Foster’s Lisa Jamison series. The author’s experience as a crime reporter shines through in her intricate and realistic plots. There is some really great character development here – Lisa grows more interesting with each book. She’s smart, capable, vulnerable, and empathetic but also tough as nails.

I continue to enjoy her work and will keep recommending it to mystery readers.

Reader Profiles, Women

Reader Profile – Grace Engelbrecht

Grace Engelbrecht is a public librarian whose home library as a child was the Gates Public Library. Outside of reading, Grace plays co-ed softball, enjoys movies, trivia and board games, and values relaxing days with her husband and son. She loves a good snack, especially popcorn on nights in at home or out at the movies. Grace hopes to finish writing her romance novel someday. Until then…

How do you treat the books you read? Do you make notes in them? Dog-ear the pages? Keep every page (and the spine!) pristine?

I treat my books well; no dog-earring for me! Recently for the first time, I highlighted and annotated a fiction book, which felt wrong and unusual, but I think when I want to peruse through it later, I’ll have notes of what stood out to me.

Do you ever judge a book by its cover? What attracts you to a cover?

Absolutely! I think it’s hard not to. I love covers that are colorful or cutesy or things with bold text. I don’t tend to gravitate towards darker covers.

Where do you get your book recommendations?

I am part of the ‘Bookstagram’ community, bookish posters on Instagram and that’s a lot of fun. I see a lot of great books that I’m interested in, and people are so great about sharing indie recommendations that maybe I wouldn’t have come across otherwise.

What is something you dislike in a book?

I would say the most annoying would be lack of quotation marks on dialogue. In college, we were assigned The Waves by Virginia Woolf, which is a stream of consciousness novel, so the lack of quotation marks makes sense, however the stream would jump from character to character without any text change and I just couldn’t get through it.

What is the funniest book you ever read?

When I was a teenager, I read a British series called The Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison. She was a highschooler with many mishaps and embarrassing moments and I remember laughing and snorting out loud when I was reading during homeroom or lunch. I’m not sure if the humor would hold up now, but I really enjoyed those at the time.

You’re on a dating app and all your matches are literary characters. Who do you select?

The ‘classic’ choice would probably be Mr. Darcy from Pride & Prejudice. Most recently, I enjoyed Daniel Grant from Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez and Leon from The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary.  I love a supportive and sweet book boyfriend.

What book marks a major milestone in your life?

The Doll People by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin is very special to me. It was really the first time I remember reading a chapter book by myself, while being so engrossed in a magical and adventurous story. I read that book five or six times.

Do you have a favorite picture book? What and why?

My favorite picture book as a child was Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran, illustrated by Barbara Cooney. It was read to me in school, then I asked for a copy at home. It captures childhood imagination and nostalgia so beautifully. Now, reading to my son, one of my favorites is You Are My I Love You by Maryann K. Cusimano, illustrated by Satome Ichikawa. It’s a poignant rhyming story of a parent and child’s relationship: “I am your water wings; you are my deep. I am your open arms; you are my running leap” is one example of the couplets in that book.

Is there an author or a book that you think is highly overrated? Why?

I think the ‘it’ contemporary author right now is Colleen Hoover. I have listened to two of her books and liked them. However, the obsession going on right now, I don’t quite understand. There are many contemporary romances that are just as well-written, if not more so. I don’t think Hoover is the superstar of romance above all others. She is good, but I wasn’t blown away.

What book would you recommend to heal a broken heart?

This is a tough one. There is some heartbreak in The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams, but the story is hopeful and uplifting. It’s insightfulness into human connection was striking.

What is a favorite quote from a book?

My favorite book is Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, so if I were to pick something from that, it would be from Will’s letter: “Live boldy…Push yourself. Don’t settle…Just live well. Just live.” I think given the story, Louisa really needed those words and she was inspired by them. To me, it’s a gentle reminder to make special the ordinary, dive into experiences when I can, and breath into the rest.
